How to Calculate Reselling Profit
Start with the item’s sale price, then subtract the costs of buying, preparing, and selling it. This calculator uses net profit = sale price − total costs. Percentage fees are estimated from the sale price; fixed fees are entered as currency amounts.
For example, if an item sells for €50 and all included costs add up to €33, estimated net profit is €17. The figures are illustrative, not a prediction of what an item will sell for.
What Costs Should Resellers Include?
Include the purchase price, shipping to you, selling and payment fees, packaging, postage you pay, and any other direct cost such as cleaning or repair. Add costs that apply to your situation rather than relying on a generic marketplace fee estimate.
The calculator’s revenue is the item sale price. It does not separately model buyer-paid shipping, tax collected, refunds, or partial fee refunds. Check your transaction statement and include any relevant net cost in “Other costs.”
Profit Margin vs Markup vs ROI
- Profit margin is net profit divided by revenue. In the €50 sale / €33 costs example, €17 ÷ €50 = 34%.
- Markup is net profit divided by purchase price. If the item cost €20, €17 ÷ €20 = 85%.
- ROI is net profit divided by the total invested cost included here. With €33 total costs, €17 ÷ €33 ≈ 51.5%.
These ratios use different denominators. ROI here includes every cost entered, not just the item purchase. The calculation excludes unentered expenses such as taxes, labor, storage, and general overhead.
Why Revenue Is Not Profit
Revenue is the amount from a sale before costs. A high sales total alone does not show what remains after inventory, fees, postage, packaging, returns, or other expenses. Track costs per item and compare settled transactions rather than treating sales screenshots as earnings.
Reselling Profit Calculator FAQ
What is a good profit margin for reselling?
There is no universal target. A workable margin depends on the item category, time spent, stock turnover, unsold inventory, return risk, and your other costs. Use your own records and decide what return makes sense for your circumstances.
What is the difference between markup and margin?
Margin divides profit by revenue; markup divides profit by the item’s purchase price. Because the denominators differ, the percentages usually differ too.
Should shipping be included in resale profit?
Include shipping you pay to source the item and shipping you pay to deliver it. This estimate does not treat buyer-paid shipping as revenue or calculate shipping-related marketplace fees automatically, so check the transaction details.
How do marketplace fees affect profit?
Fees reduce what remains from a sale. Enter an estimated percentage of sale price or a fixed amount for each fee, and verify the current fee rules and calculation basis for the specific marketplace, payment method, and country.
Can I use this calculator for Vinted, Depop, eBay, or other marketplaces?
Yes, as a general estimate: enter the actual costs and fee amounts for your transaction. Platform rules, fee structures, shipping options, and commercial-selling requirements vary by market and can change, so check the relevant platform’s current official information.
